Yesterday was the day I've been waiting for. The day when some kind of opportunity presents itself, where normally I would laugh and say yeah right . . . but not this time. This time I said let's do it.
Mark over at Staufenrunning posted on my Facebook wall, with this link: http://www.ragnarrelay.com/race/adirondacks. It is a link to a 200 mile relay race across all of the Adirondacks in upstate New York. This is exactly the type of thing I've been looking for. I wanted some kind of not-your-ordinary adventure that will make for a great story, and to be able to share it with people important in my life.
The Ragnar run is a 200 mile relay that starts just North of my hometown Albany, in Saratoga N.Y. From there we head right into the heart of the Adirondacks, passed Lake George all the way to Lake Champlain, and then eventually turn west to finish up at Lake Placid. The race team will consist of twelve people, each running three legs of the journey. In total there will be 36 exchanges so it is logistically fun too! I believe every runner will have to run at night too, as it is over a span of 24 hours. Each runner will be responsible for a total of 12 to 20 miles, each leg varying in difficulty so there is some strategy involved too. While it isn't a race that we will win, it will be a hell of a good time and awesome to say we did it.
I am practically buzzing with excitement at just the possibility of it, and what is even more awesome is that we already have gotten a lot of interest from people! If you happen to follow this blog, and are up for the challenge post in the comments and let me know! The race is September 29 and 30th, and I promise it will be a great, though sleep deprived time!
I’ve been wanting to do Ragnar! I’ve heard a lot of good things about it (though almost everyone says that running at night is scary because you are pretty much on your own in a dark secluded area). And I know you guys don’t care as much, but one friend said that it wasn’t really competitive because there were so few teams and they really spread out start times. But I think you guys would rock this!
Sounds to me like you and Aaron should make a trip to Upstate New York in September!
Yeah, the night running should be really interesting. Hopefully we can figure out the logistics to make it not as scary, but it does seem kinda nuts to run at night to just a head lamp!
I am ready to RAGNAR-ROCK
They have bears up there….
Mike asked me to talk you out of this. I’m here to talk you into it, and to including me, and forcing him into it.
There are no hills in the Adirondacks right?
HA! Mike has been like, talk to Kevin he will tell you how bad it is, seriously. I think the Adirondacks are basically flat…. only a couple of rolling hills really….
Awesome.
