It’s always a nice break when you get a spell of cool weather during the summer. This past weekend was the refresher I think everyone in the northeast needed to be pulled out of the lazy habits that hit when summer just gets too darn hot.

I was lucky enough to enjoy a very relaxing New England weekend. After a half day’s work on Friday, Jeff and I hit the road to visit his family up in New Hampshire. It was a beautiful day, and perfect for a walk through town and along the brackish Swampscott River that runs through the cute little town of Exeter. With the salty air, Exeter really does feel like a coastal New England town, although it is pretty far inland. It’s nice to take a break from the city, we were definitely in need of a mini vacation.

All in all, the weekend was lovely. We enjoyed a meal out in Portsmouth, got to hang out along the banks of the Merrimack River further north, and had a fun night people watching at Hampton Beach. Sunday morning we woke up a little sluggish, after enjoying tasty treats and drinks the night before, but Jeff, knowing I would be very angry at myself later on if I brought my sneakers back to Boston unused, made me get up and head out for a nice run. The run went OK, definitely not one of the best, but for a vacation weekend, I’ll take it. Our first mile was a gradual uphill, which running in Cambridge has never prepared me for, the second mile was a winding country road, and the last couple were on trails through the woods, a first for me! The trail running was hands down my favorite part, and I wish someone would plant woods for me to run in near my house. The dirt path was so much easier to run on, I felt like I was being pushed along, as opposed to the hard hitting legs-on-concrete feeling.

After our run, we thought we’d be done with exercise for the day, but we were wrong! We went up to Ogunquit, Maine and Jeff’s mom brought us on a lovely (and gentle) 2.5 mile hike along the sea cliff; the Marginal Way path overlooks the ocean. It wasn’t too hot, and the sea breeze made it a perfect day. We topped off our exercise with fish n’ chips and ice cream, but, hey, life is about balance, right?
