I am currently no longer speaking to my office-mate. He has crossed the line. He argues that cupcakes and muffins are one in the same, with the exception that cupcakes have some sort of frosting/icing (crumbles need not apply). I cannot work like this.
While I agree, that we can make snap judgements based solely on the presence or absence of frosting, there is an underlying chemical difference in the recipes themselves. However, there is such a wide variety of preparation methods that confound this clear distinction.
For a much more concise definition, there is a wonderful write up on stack-exchange:
I took this to twitter to the only bakery I would trust to make this call.
@flourbakerycafe My friend and I are arguing about the difference between Cupcakes and Muffins. Could you weigh in? #SOS #GreatBakingDebate

With any luck, we will hear back and settle this once and for all.
