I am not a morning person. I've never been a morning person. My Dad is also not a morning person. I firmly believe he didn't make us take the bus to school because he also wanted to sleep in that extra 15 minutes in the morning. It is how I was raised, or maybe just genetic. Who knows.
Today, I was a morning person. Though admittedly, not by choice. Ellie has a strange yet powerful desire to transition to working out in the morning, and I want to be as supportive as possible of this change. I know how much of a struggle it is to workout regularly regardless of the time of day, and we all know how much it helps to have two people working together to make that happen. The support and encouragement on those hard workouts is crucial to being successful, and I want to be there for her.
But damn, waking up at 6:15 is horse crap. I had all I could do to make it to the gym with her. I had terrible stomach cramps, probably from all the garbage we have been eating recently, and being coupled with not sleeping very long, this morning was a prefect storm of feeling terrible. I had all I could do to grind out a half hour on the stationary bike before transitioning to the treadmill for a painfully slow walk.
In search of a solution, I naturally looked to the internet.
Hopefully I can find the balance I needed to become a morning warrior. And if not, learn how to suck it up and act convincingly enough so that Ellie can enjoy her morning workouts.
I was never a morning person, everybody knows that. Again, probably genetics. But, for the past month or two, my lovable puppy has decided that we get up at 6:25 now. At first, I tried to fight it, but the imminent threat of an accident on my carpet has gotten me out of bed on to our morning walk very consistently. Keeping her on a schedule has been key to potty training, but there have been added perks for me! I now have time every morning to not only take Penny for an extended walk, but also to drink coffee out of a mug on the couch, to eat a real breakfast, to watch the Today show (the 7 o’clock REAL NEWS hour), and get to work before anyone else. It’s been pretty great, and I highly recommend the morning to anyone who hasn’t experienced it before.
Although, going to the gym at 6am is a different story, and one I would not endorse. 😉 Keep at it, guys!
“…I highly recommend the morning to anyone who hasn’t experienced it before.” This is the best thing I have ever read. Thank you, ADN!
Nice post, Jon. I can’t imagine going to the gym or exercising in the morning. I guess it’s because I would have to get up at 4:30 or 5:00 to do anything productive and still be at work on time. Maybe on a weekend?
Always prefer exercising in the morning, but not 6:15a.m.. 7:30 is more to my liking.. Some good suggestions though- but don’t know if I could do it, summer maybe but not in the winter.
Ok, so its my fault we are not naturally early risers! I agree, a routine of early starts is the best way to get the most done. Jono, for your stomach problems, stop blaming the food and take the probiotics. One a day really works! Ok, so I’ll start the morning routine again tomorrow…
I got teary-eyed reading this. You are very sweet to accompany me even when you felt like death. I appreciate you. Let’s do it again tomorrow! . . . But no way am I taking a cold shower.
